Section 106 Success Stories
Federal and state historic preservation laws established the Section 106 review process to ensure that cultural resources receive appropriate consideration during project planning. The laws recognize that our historic and archeological properties are important and irreplaceable resources. Heritage resources are a vital part of our communities, enrich the lives of present and future generations, and provide tangible links with the past. Beyond fulfilling legal requirements, state and federal project review makes a valuable contribution to protecting our cultural heritage and enhancing our communities. Information on Maryland’s heritage resources
Cultural resource investigations conducted for state and federal project review generate important information regarding Maryland’s past – through archival research, oral history interviews, surveys, evaluations, data recovery investigations, recordation and documentation of resources. The MHT Library serves as the repository for this essential data. Archeological investigations recover artifacts and generate associated records – often curated at MHT’s Maryland Archeological Conservation Laboratory where those remains are preserved and available for future study and exhibit. Without these efforts, invaluable information regarding Maryland’s history, archeology, and inhabitants would be lost.
Revitalizing Communities

The preservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings provides viable uses for these important properties, revitalizes communities, and truly embodies the principles of sustainability. In addition, compliance efforts help leverage other historic preservation advocacy endeavors in your community and beyond.
Heritage Tourism
Historic properties are a main focus of heritage tourism efforts throughout all regions of the state. State and federal project review efforts help enhance opportunities for visiting Maryland’s historic places.
Public Education
State and federal project review also provides unique opportunities to educate and inform the public about heritage in their community. Compliance efforts help study, preserve and enhance Maryland’s diverse cultural heritage, protecting resources for present and future generations to enjoy and appreciate.
