Project Review and Protection

East New Market Streetscape, Dorchester Co. East New Market Streetscape, Dorchester Co.

Historic preservation is an important tool for strengthening local economies and providing communities with a sense of place and connection to their shared past. Once historic resources have been identified and evaluated, protection mechanisms can be employed to ensure good management of these properties for the benefit of all Marylanders.

There are a range of historic resource protection mechanisms available at the federal, state, and local level. MHT has a direct role in some of these, including the issuance of terrestrial archaeology permits for state lands, consultation on impacts to historic burial sites, administration of historic preservation easements held by MHT, and consultation on state and federal undertakings. Each of these programs plays a different role in helping to preserve sites, structures, and landscapes that are historically significant.
